11/20/2008: "PRESS AND SCREENINGS"

1) PRESS AND BLOGS
Check out a blog about Eating Alaska, called Vegans in Wasilla,by Associate Producer, Val Lapinski. Val not only tramped through the woods on our first all women deer hunt, she also brainstormed about what this film might be about, produced a public radio piece abut the project, and continued to add ideas from afar after she moved to New York City to pursue grad school and other opportunities,

Read another story from the other side of the country in Capital City Weekly, a Southeast Alaska paper:
Sitka filmmaker searches for the right foods to eat
"Her film explores questions without offering definite answers, and Frankenstein is clear that her goal was to incite discussion, not convert others to a specific way of thinking about food."I've lived here a long time and I (started wondering) how do you get a conversation going about the environment so it doesn't seem like you're some kind of greenie?" she said."Eating to Alaska" is her answer to this question. And judging by the initial response, it seems to be working. The film debut in Sitka last weekend to a crowd of almost 500 people. "It was a festive community event that brought people together, stimulated discussion and promoted action (such as) our new community greenhouse," Frankenstein wrote in an e-mail after the event. "Exactly what I hoped for - film as community art! And (I) want that to happen in other communities!"

2) FIRST SCREENINGS: This past weekend we just about filled the new local performing arts center at the premiere of Eating Alaska in Sitka. It was a collaboratively created event that included community booths on everything from raising chickens in Alaska and how far our food travels, to large scale greenhousing, a performance by the Mt. Edgecumbe Yupik Dancers and tons of great energy! Our goal was to stimulate conversation about what we put on our plates, on health and sustainability and to get support and start up funds for a community greenhouse project. It was a great success! A few days before that we showed Eating Alaska in Fairbanks at the incredible Museum of the North with a great discussion afterwards.

3) UPCOMING SCREENINGS: We show the film in Anchorage at the Alaska Public Health Summit on December 2nd, at the Anchorage International Film Festival on December 6th, 2:30 P.M at the Loussac Library. and on campus at the University of Alaska Anchorage on December 5th. We're aiming to show the film in more communities throughout Alaska starting in February. More screenings are lining up including the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival, the Tucson Slow Food & Film Festival on Film the weekend of January 9-11th and the Mendocino Film Festival in May.
